United TEFL Experts help you navigate the world of teaching English abroad
One of the best ways to live abroad is to be an English teacher. English teachers are in high demand all over the world as English is the universal business language. A teacher can earn a sustainable income and maintain a good lifestyle, living as a local. Gone are the backpacking days when an English speaker could just show up and start teaching. Today, language employers require TEFL training and actual TEFL classroom experience, which you gain from a 4 week TEFL, Trinity CertTESOL or CELTA certification course. Teaching math or science to someone who speaks the same language can be very different than teaching language, where the biggest obstacle is communication.
United TEFL Training is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Corporation which aims to connect people with quality TEFL, CertTESOL & CELTA teacher training certifications and opportunities to teach English in paid and volunteer positions following the course.
By showcasing volunteer-driven organizations, which provide English language training, TEFL teachers can learn more about opportunities to help immigrants, asylum-seekers and human trafficking victims around the world. Make a tax deductible scholarship contribution today! DONATE TODAY
Find out more about TEFL, Trinity CertTESOL and CELTA courses available in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
A TEFL certificate has become the standard, or benchmark, for hiring teachers and a TEFL training course is the best way to gain the necessary skills to teach language. Employers will always choose teachers with a TEFL certificate over those with an online or weekend TEFL course, or no training at all. A 4 week TEFL/ CertTESOL/ CELTA Certificate opens doors and gives you independence and flexibility - You decide where you do the training, where you live and where you work.

What does TEFL, CertTESOL and CELTA mean?
These all mean the same thing, teaching English. #TEFL = Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (a term used in non-English speaking places where English is a foreign language) #TESOL = Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (a term used in English speaking places where there are people who are learning English as a Second language). Accredited by Trinity College London. #CELTA = Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (this term is the Cambridge Exam Board "brand name" for a TEFL course) |
You need a TEFL Certificate to get a job! You can be hired with any 4-week training course listed above.
Employers are most interested in the fact that you have the practical teaching experience from a 140+ hour course, not the name brand on the paper. Weekend and Online courses do not offer the 6-8 hours of real classroom experience, observed by peers and a TEFL course tutor. We have seen many employers specifically mention in job ads that they DO NOT want someone with an online or weekend TEFL course. The cost is a little more, but the experience and opportunities are priceless. Consider a 4 week residential TEFL course to get you where you want to be with the maximum advantage.

How TEFL works:
You decide where to go! 4 week TEFL Training courses are offered in many exciting locations around the world. We offer popular destinations in Europe, Asia, Latin America and even New York City. During the 4 week course you meet fun new people, enjoy the exciting city life and complete the TEFL coursework which includes real English classes daily. You teach and observe these English classes each day. One month housing options are offered and available at each TEFL course location, in private / shared apartments or family home stays.
You decide where to work! After the TEFL Training course you can either stay in that city/country or return home or go elsewhere and start teaching. You will interview with private language academies/schools (employers) and get offers for a teaching schedule or block of hours. You can work for any number of employers and teaching jobs are available year round. The TEFL course is not an employer but they train you and assist with job placement.
You decide how long you stay! You can teach for as long or short as you want. This arrangement is between you and the language school employer. The employers typically want you to teach for the academic year, so the students have the same teacher for a complete session. The academic year is generally from September to June in the northern hemisphere and March to November in the southern hemisphere. You can start teaching at any point during the year. In summer, there are short term teaching opportunities with language camps for teens and young learners.

TEFL Course Highlights:
|

The TEFL course is 4 weeks, Monday through Friday
Plan to be at school from about 9 am - 6 pm daily
Your course tutors will give out a detailed schedule of assignments at the start of the course.
As a teacher trainee you will work in teaching groups, sharing the teaching practice (TP) sessions and working together closely so that the sessions are coherent and productive for the English students. TP begins the first week so you begin to feel comfortable and confident teaching. By the end of week three, trainees are preparing reasonably independently, consulting the trainers only when necessary.
The fully accredited TEFL course is divided into 3 main areas:
1. Teaching Methodology (class time)
The Methodology inputs will present a variety of techniques for introducing and practicing new language, for encouraging accurate and fluent speech, raising students' interest and participation; setting language in realistic contexts; lesson planning, using course books and authentic material; developing listening, writing and reading skills, checking students' understanding and providing feedback; testing and using games, songs, video and online learning. |
2. Language Awareness (Grammar!)
The grammar sessions are intended to develop an ability to analyze language from the point of view of the students and what they need to know. This includes techniques for clarifying meaning, usage and pronunciation. Topics covered include the tense system of English, the phonemic chart and the sounds of English, conditional sentences, modal verbs expressing future meanings, stress and intonation, features of connected speech; and the correction of pronunciation errors. Phew! :) |
3. Teaching Practice (TP)
Teaching skills learned earlier in the day are practiced during the TP sessions. Every candidate is required to complete a minimum number of teaching hours. Additionally, trainees will observe teachers during classes. After TP, feedback sessions will follow either immediately or on the following day. During feedback, the TP group and the tutor will discuss the lessons. At the end of each feedback session, a written evaluation from the tutor is given to each candidate. |

By the end of the course, trainees are fully prepared with the essentials of teaching English, along with a broad range of effective teaching techniques and classroom management skills.
Additionally, the local course staff provides expert job guidance sessions as a group and one on one. This can help you decide where to go and teach, prepare your resume/CV and find the job you're looking for.
A note from a student: It was a pleasure hearing your input tonight at the event. You are living proof that taking a chance and plunging into the unknown can be a success. I hope to someday do the same and your story, as living proof, is very motivating. Thank you!
